Condition Details / Information Notes
Insufficient justification has been provided for the felling of this prominent tree.
Although the applicant has provided a tree condition report with the application, this information regarding the tree's condition is vague and lacking in detail.
The tree condition reports states that there are compression forks within the crown of the tree that are likely points of future failure. These compression forks are a species characteristic of this tree and so are typical in this instance. During my site visit no cracking was observed in these compression forks nor were that obvious signs of crack propagation in the form of reactive growth.
The report also states that the tree is leaning towards the road which is a cause for concern. Google Maps imagery shows that this tree has had a significant lean for many years and so they tree will have adapted to withstand this lean. The upper canopy shows recent growth (appox 15 years) growing in a more vertical manner showing the trees countering adoption to minimise lever stress.
The tree report has used the compression forks and lean to justify the felling of the tree however these concerns have not been adequately evidenced. An aerial inspection of the compression forks would be beneficial as no defects were visible from the ground. Also there were no visible signs of root plate movement during the tree officer's site visit confirming the long term lean theory.
The loss of this prominent tree would be to the detriment of public amenity and the Sedgeburrow treescape. The concern and perceived future threat to the highway could more suitable be resolved with some precautionary end weight removal of the largest lateral limb growing towards the highway and the installation of a non invasive cable bracing solution.
